This is the Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor or Manifold Air Temperature sensor(MAT) for 86/87 Turbo Regal and the 1989 TTA.
This item is needed if doing an 84/85 to 86/87 ECM upgrade.
IAT what does it actually do The sensor uses a thermistor to control the signal voltage to the vehicles ECM. The variable resistor changes its resistance based on the intake air temperature.
1) Low intake air temperature produces high resistance
2)High temperature causes low resistance.
The ECM supplies a constant electrical signal to the IAT sensor through a resistor in the ECM and monitors the voltage change. When the voltage resistance is changed the ECM calculates the air temperature and uses this data to assist in determining fuel delivery and spark advance.
A bad or malfunctioning air intake or manifold temperature sensor will cause a Service Engine Soon (SES) light error code.
On your Turbo Buick a code 23 is Low Temp, a code 25 is Hi Temp.
The sensor reading is -40*F to 266*F.
This can cause a rough running due to inaccurate ignition and fuel timing. If your sensor thinks it is cold out you will get a rich condition because it is adding fuel.
This air intake temperature sensor mounts to the factory plastic 90 above your factory air cleaner. Most people when installing a cold air kit will install in the base of the air filter before the Mass air flow sensor. Others to get a true Manifold temp have installed in the intake manifold or Up pipe to the Throttle Body. Where ever you install it you will get an accurate reading of the air temperature.
