Differential Cover Made in cast Aluminum. Bearing Cap Support, GM.
9-Bolt, powder coated white with Pontiac emblem, hardware and gasket.
Prep the Surfaces
- Clean all old gasket material off the housing and cover.
- Degrease both surfaces thoroughly using brake cleaner.
- Due to manufacturing process for the 9 bolt rear bearing caps, they must be marked for position and then removed to grind, sand, or machine the outside edge of the bearing cap. This will provide a flat surface for the load bolt to seat against.
If using the recommended bearing cap stud kit do the following:
A. Removed the original bolts holding the caps one side at a time
B. Install studs, and torque studs into the housing no more than 10 ft/lbs.
C. Re-install bearing caps and torque nuts to 50 ft/lbs. with oil
Back load bolts out to clear the bearing caps, but do not remove them. Failing to back out the load bolts may damage the cover or bearing caps
Install the TA Performance girdle
Torque the mounting bolts to 25 ft/lbs. (max)
screw the load bolts in by hand until they make contact with the bearing caps. Torque the load bolts to 5-10 ft/lbs. MAXIMUM, excessive torque will result in distorted bearing caps. DO NO OVER TORQUE THE LOAD BOLTS!! Then snug or torque the jamb nuts to 20 ft/lbs. to lock the load bolt. For a 9-bolt differential girdle cover tighten the perimeter mounting bolts to 25 ft-lbs. using a crisscross pattern. Do not overtighten, as this can warp the cover or crush the gasket. Use a small film of RTV on the 9 bolt gasket. Do not put too much RTV on the cover. 1/8" is recommended. Make sure there is RTV around all 9 holes in a circle perimeter. Wait at least 24 hours for the RTV to fully cure before filling the differential with gear oil. Check for any leaks after filling. Ensure both surfaces are completely dry before applying RTV. Note: It is common for leaking a little gear oil through the "load bolts/jamb nuts". Use RTV or thread sealant around the bolts after torquing but before the nut is put on. You do not want gear oil on your garage floor or on your new cover.
